Why

We think it is important that you, as a citizen, make your voice heard by standing up for human rights and fundamental freedoms. Those rights and freedoms – our common values - are not being respected in the current accession negotiations with Turkey. That is why we started this petition: to give the European Union's citizens a voice in the European Parliament and the European Commission.

The current accession negotiations are taking long. Turkey is by far not meeting the requirements for becoming a member state of the European Union. In 1987 Turkey applied for full membership of the European Union for the first time. Accession negotiations only started in 2005. As of now, only 16 of the 35 negotiation chapters have been opened – of which only 1 has been provisionally closed. The reason why they are going so slow? Turkey does not meet the requirements. It is neglecting human rights and fundamental freedoms and has only regressed further since the recent failed coup d'êtat.

- Turkey is violating the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. This charter expresses the human rights and fundamental freedoms that are at the very heart of the EU and any potential member state has to comply with it. The preamble of that Charter states that:

“Conscious of its spiritual and moral heritage, the Union is founded on the indivisible, universal values of human dignity, freedom, equality and solidarity; it is based on the principles of democracy and the rule of law. It places the individual at the heart of its activities, by establishing the citizenship of the Union and by creating an area of freedom, security and justice.

The Union contributes to the preservation and to the development of these common values while respecting the diversity of the cultures and traditions of the peoples of Europe as well as the national identities of the Member States and the organisation of their public authorities at national, regional and local levels; it seeks to promote balanced and sustainable development and ensures free movement of persons, goods, services and capital, and the freedom of establishment.”

Turkey is publicly and unashamedly violating practically all these values and rights. There is no peace as a civil war is fought out against the Kurds. There is no freedom of press as critical newspapers are shut down and journalists persecuted. There is no freedom of expression or religion as Gülenists and other religions than Islam all experience regular discrimination. There is no equality as religious and ethnic minorities are persecuted and discriminated. Thus, there is no respect for human dignity and freedom.

- Turkey is violating the first conditions for EU accession which are: stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities. The Treaty of the European Union states that any European country may apply for membership if it respects the democratic values of the EU and is committed to promoting them.

The European Commission has admitted that there is violation of democracy and the rule of law in Turkey. Major human rights organisations have come to the same conclusions when assessing Turkey. Both Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch issued clear reports in this regard. But still, the accession talks have not been halted.

Many EU citizens abhor what is going on but feel powerless to stop it. This petition wants to give the EU citizens a voice in the European Parliament and the European Commission. They need to see that we do not accept that our common values are not respected.

The EU accession talks with Turkey need to end immediately.

Make your voice heard by signing the petition. Let's stand together for our core values and show that we are united in standing for human dignity and freedom for all!
